Matthew Rolston


Widely recognized as one of the leading photographers and directors of his generation, Matthew Rolston’s imagery has helped define the modern aesthetics of celebrity and beauty photography, having perfectly captured just about every film, music and television star working today. Whether exhibited in print or on television, Rolston’s work truly embodies modern glamour. His approach has often been cited as a modern link to Hollywood’s past and its grand tradition of celebrity portraiture.

Renowned for his influential lighting techniques, Rolston has helmed award-winning music videos for artists as diverse as Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyonce Knowles and even Marilyn Manson. He has also worked on both print and television campaigns for a wide variety of international brands including Campari, Bacardi, L’Oreal, Revlon, Estee Lauder, Clairol, Pantene, Elizabeth Arden, Gap, Polo Ralph Lauren and Burberry.

In 1998 Rolston endowed “The Matthew Rolston Scholarship for Photography and Film” at the Art Center College of Design. In 2008, Rolston renewed his support for the scholarship and added the very special privilege of “direct mentoring” for its recipients. In August 2006, the Art Center College of Design awarded Rolston an honorary doctorate for his contributions to the field of photography.
