Meet the Miss Universe Singapore Contestants

Before you watch the Miss Universe Singapore Competition on the Miss U App this Sunday, October 16th, check out the contestants who will be competing for the crown!

Only one of these confidently beautiful women will go on to compete in the MISS UNIVERSE Competition.  Let’s meet the contestants…

Miss Universe Singapore 2016 is the first beauty pageant for Joeypink Lai, who participated in The New Paper New Face 2015.

Before becoming a real estate agent, the Ngee Ann Polytechnic alumnus was a flight stewardess with Singapore Airlines for three years.

She aspires to be an entrepreneur, eventually owning a clothing brand and running it successfully.

Some may find Luisa Gan, who recently graduated from Singapore Institute of Management, familiar as she was on a student contract with Mediacorp for a year.

Growing up, she was a tomboy who never wore skirts or dresses. But once she stumbled into the entertainment industry during her pre-university break, she never looked back – despite starting from the bottom as a calefare and facing rejected from numerous modelling agencies.

One of her best decisions was exercising and eating right, as she lost 20kg and went down seven jean sizes.

The budding actress is fluent in English, Mandarin and Bahasa Indonesia and can host too. She won Miss Singapore Tourism Queen International 2014 and enjoys reading, yoga and hula-hooping.

She has worked with the Singapore Children’s Society on their anti-bullying campaign and hopes to shed light on more social causes related to children. She dreams of creating her own brand with her own cosmetics and clothing line.

If she wins Miss Universe Singapore 2016, she hopes to make history by being the first Singaporean to crack the Top 5 of Miss Universe.

Nikki Tay, who participated in The New Paper New Face in 2010, is a trainee lawyer.

She is definitely one academically-inclined young woman, and is proud to call herself a nerd.

In fact, the proudest moments of her life was when she became the top O level student in her cohort at Singapore Chinese Girls School, scoring nine A1s. She went on to excel at Raffles Institution, scoring 4As for her A levels.

After completing her Bachelor of Law at the University of Bristol in the UK, she interned at various law practices.

Nikki also loves language. One of her short stories was published in a book in primary school and she was also the Chief Editor of the Student Publications Committee at Singapore Chinese Girls School and a member of the Raffles Press in junior college. She also enjoys doing math questions for leisure, to the bewilderment of her friends.

She hopes to break the stereotype that a woman can only be either intelligent or beautiful but never both at the same time.

Nutan Rai is a full-time nurse specialising in Diabetic Retinopathy at the Singapore National Eye Centre.

The freelance model has participated in Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant 2014 and is interested in dance and badminton.

She is currently pursuing a degree in human resource management at Kaplan Singapore.

Patricia Eng won Bride of the World 2010 and participated in Miss Asia Pacific World 2011. Before becoming a jewellery designer for her own label HAUS OF PESH, she was an Assistant Fashion Stylist and later an Event Coordinator at Asia Fashion Inc.

The diploma holder from Singapore Raffles Design Institute enjoys sports and outdoor adventures, having been part of her schools’ teams in the area of track and field and sport climbing, and also won medals for kayaking.

She embarked on a series of waterfall treks exploration with her family in Gold Coast, Australia. Last year, she had her first mountaineering experience at Mount Rinjani in Indonesia. Earlier this month, she went to Leh, India for a second attempt at mountaineering at one of the Himalayan peaks named Stok Kangri, with an elevation of 6,153m.

She is also an avid volunteer at animal and dog shelters, committing at least two to three times per week, and loves spending time with her beloved French bulldog.

Poojaa Gill is no newbie to the modelling or pageant scene.

The full-time model was a The New Paper New Face 2006 finalist at the tender age of 15, and has gone on to bigger titles like Miss Tourism Queen 2007, Miss Asia Pacific World 2014 and Miss Eurasia 2016. She was also a finalist on the second season of the reality TV series Asia’s Next Top Model.

Since starting out as a national athlete when she was just 12 years old and followed by the pageants, her passion to bring glory to Singapore has only grown and she views Miss Universe Singapore as a golden opportunity to do so.

The communications graduate from RMIT University (Singapore) likes to read, travel and work out in her free time.

S Sreeveena, who holds a diploma in design (interior and landscape) from BCA Academy, is a design coordinator at Sunway Woodcraft Construction.

She participated in Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant 2011 and Miss Singapore India 2011.

She enjoys cycling, bowling and playing badminton with her family members during her free time. She is also a self-confessed movie junkie who loves Marvel and DC films and TV series.

Children bring her much joy and she visits her friends’ kids as well as her nieces and nephews during her free time, bringing them gifts each time. Her ultimate dream is to be able to travel to Third World countries to build better and stable homes for the less fortunate. In the meantime, she recently started sponsoring a couple of kids from the Philippines and Sri Lanka through World Vision Singapore.

This is the first time Shanice Hedger, a communications undergraduate at Nanyang Technological University, has participated in a beauty pageant.

She enjoys singing, running and watching make-up tutorials on YouTube.

Shanice joined both seasons of the Channel 5 reality TV singing competition The Final 1, and managed to crack the top 8 of Season 2. She sings regularly at Skyve Wine Bar & Bistro and performs covers on her YouTube channel.

She hopes to use the Miss Universe Singapore platform to reach out to more youths and show that by being confidently beautiful, you will love yourself for who you are and do everything that you love.

Shona Woo, The Raffles Junior College alumnus, who participated in the Mediacorp reality TV talent show Hey Gorgeous 2013, is a chemistry graduate from Nanyang Technological University.

Shona is a beauty with brains, and confesses to loving studying and taking exams. She was on her university’s dean’s list for two academic years and enjoyed peer mentoring sessions.

She is passionate about education and started teaching part-time as a private tutor in 2009. In her second year of university, she visited a village school in Cambodia to teach English and it was one of the most humbling and enriching life experiences she’s had.

Before she became a coding instructor, her current vocation, was a Specialist Teaching Associate and Curriculum Specialist at The Learning Lab.

Shona enjoys figure skating – she can do spins and jumps on ice – and reading anything from light-hearted novels to academic journal articles.

Sonya Elisabeth Branson, who is of English, Indian, Portuguese, Peranakan and Dutch descent, is trained in piano, classical singing and emceeing, and enjoys travelling, reading, singing and dancing in her free time.

An alumnus of Methodist Girls’ School and Victoria Junior College, she has a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Psychology and went on to pursue an Honours in Psychology at the University of Western Australia. During her time in school, she was also a Psychology Research Assistant, where she assisted with the collection of data for a PhD thesis on Working Memory.

Her interest and passion for the field developed from a desire to help children suffering from behavioural and learning difficulties. She champions the importance of specialist early intervention especially for conditions in which these early support systems are particularly crucial, such as autism.

Clearly passionate about working with children, Sonya was also part of the executive committee of Youths.Care, a student-initiated community project that raised $25,000 in aid of financially disadvantaged children.

She has been a full-time model with Basic Models Management since 2014 and has participated in fashion shoots, print advertisements, events and fashion shows. Sonya also joined the International Fashion Super Model Competition 2016 in Hong Kong.

Tanisha Khan is the youngest finalist in the Top 15.

She is currently studying at Temasek Polytechnic and pursuing a Diploma in Business, and participated in The New Paper New Face 2015.

She enjoys playing soccer and is interested in speech and drama and acting.

Vanessa Tay is currently pursuing her degree in theatre (English drama) at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.

She can sing, dance and act, and in her free time, she enjoys playing the piano, reading, cooking and baking.

Vanessa was Miss Singapore Chinatown 2015 and her lifelong mission and dream is to raise awareness for and impart to the world a deeper understanding of the struggles of those suffering from ADHD, as she has a close childhood friend who suffers from the condition and has been ostracised and victimised because of it.

Althea Lew is a marketing manager who enjoys dancing, diving and travelling to different parts of the world.

In the past year, she’s been addicted to the dance genre West Coast Swing – to the point where she’s in the dance studio three to four times a week and would even book trips overseas just to join dance competitions.

She graduated from the National University of Singapore with an honours degree in Business Administration.

Cheryl Chou is currently pursuing a Bachelor in Fine Arts (Fashion Media and Industries) at LASALLE College of the Arts.

When she was eight years old, her family moved to Suzhou, China and stayed there for three years before moving on to Shanghai, where she graduated high school and did her International Baccalaureate studies.

She is a fitness and health junkie who loves to cook and exercise, and even wakes up at 4am in the morning just to squeeze in a good workout before school. She has also adopted a largely plant-based diet and is a vegan.

Hazel Tay was born and raised in Brunei Darussalam by her Singaporean father and Bruneian mother.

A data analyst by day, she enjoys yoga, reading and playing the piano in her free time.

After high school, she moved back to Singapore to pursue a degree in Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University. Upon graduation, she went on to complete a Masters of Science in Financial Mathematics at the University of Chicago. Her passion for Mathematics stems from her enjoyment in tackling challenging problems. During her studies, she also discovered an unexpected love for coding.

She hopes to be a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist.
