Halima Aden is the First to Compete in Miss Minnesota Wearing a Hijab and Burkini

Halima Aden is the first contestant to compete in Miss Minnesota USA wearing a hijab and burkini.  Halima was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and moved to the United States with her family when she was 7 years old.

Halima told the Star Tribune, “I just want to go on as myself.”

“That’s made me so proud to be a part of this,” she said. “Just give it a try. You might not win, but maybe the fifth, sixth girl will win. Don’t let anything get in the way.”

While Halima did not end up taking the crown, she definitely made history.
